A special experience for photographers in Svalbard. The ship we are on, uses electric propulsion, which means quieter operation and less vibration on board, respecting nature’s serene silence. The ship holds 12 guests, it is a Class 1A Hull ( the ship is specially built and reinforced to navigate through sea ice) This means, with the new rules for polar bear viewing, we will up in the ice
This is an expedition tour, which means, there is not a set itinerary, we will go where we think the best photographic opportunities are at that time. We might head up to the ice pack or make landings along the way. When we do landings, we will be accompanied by 2 expert guides, as we are in polar bear country. Some of you might want to do a hike while others may prefer to stick closer to the shore and photograph. This can be done but in 2 groups, one hiking, and one beach. The main fitness is getting in and out of a the zodiac and walking along shore.
Wildlife in Svalbard is of a wondrous nature but never guaranteed. Most animals people hope to try and see are polar bears, reindeer, arctic fox, seals , whales, puffins, walrus and a multitude of sea birds. The scenery in that location is breathtaking and moody, 60 % of the island is glaciated. West coast landscape is alpine with pointed mountains, and the northern and eastern side are more wide open with plateau shaped mountains. The Svalbard walrus population was hunted to near extinction hundreds of years ago and remains Red Listed (Vulnerable) today. Surveys at haul out sites shows their numbers are increasing. Bearded seals are the largest species of Arctic seal. They grow to lengths of about 7 to 8 feet and range from about 575 to 800 pounds. Wildlife viewing can be down from either the yacht or the zodiacs when we cruise, and from our landings. We will not land if a polar bear is also on the land. There are 2 zodiacs aboard, these reliable vessels will transport you from the ship to shore, facilitate breathtaking encounters with glacier faces, and position you in front of mesmerizing Humpback whale migrations.
Our ship is for 12 guests in 7 spacious cabins, all newly refurbished and featuring private facilities and lower beds. (And 2 single cabins for those that wish to travel by themselves) The cabin categories include 1 Owner’s Cabin, 1 Superior Cabin, 1 Double Cabin, 2 Twin Cabins and 2 Single Cabins. The Owner’s Cabin has 6 windows and a queen bed, while the Superior Cabin offers 2 twin beds. The Double Cabin features a double bed, and the Twin Cabins each have 2 separate beds. Both the Owner’s Cabin and the Superior Cabin include a separate seating area. All cabins are equipped with a desk, chair and wardrobe.
All guest cabins will have their own private bathroom and shower. Guests can unwind in the cedar-lined sauna, complete with a cold shower and a small changing room, or relax in the richly appointed saloon and dining mess room, featuring luxurious crotch-mahogany paneling, a bar, a card table, and a library. Several open and semi-enclosed deck spaces provide perfect vantage points to soak in the breathtaking Arctic scenery. An international crew will warmly welcome you aboard, and the bridge is always open for visits, offering a unique opportunity to engage with the ship’s operations.
This is a photographic tour, not a workshop, things will happen fast at times, you will need to have some knowledge of how to operate your camera. And with 24 hours of daylight, you never know when something will pop up. Even though I am helping with the settings, you should be familiar with your camera, and have patience.
I have worked in Svalbard on expedition ships since 2013. I have been running my own tours there for 4 years now.
